The Role & Responsibilities
This is a varied and exciting role in the Enterprise SME – Risk team which covers three areas of responsibility: oversight of portfolio and thematic performance, maintenance and adherence to Credit Policy & Framework governance requirements, and contributing Credit Risk subject matter expertise to projects. This specific role will have an focus on the Governance side re documenting policy, process and procedure but will also be involved in the other activities of the department.
Governance
The Credit Risk Management Framework underpins how all lending undertaken by the business unit, and requires regular review, refinement and refreshing to ensure it remains appropriate and relevant to the changing risk environment. The role holder will be responsible for ensuring the Framework requirements are translated into local policies and procedures to ensure adherence: Specific responsibilities include:
Reviewing and/or writing / amending, as needed, the policies and procedures needed in each of the lending/portfolio areas of Enterprise SME to ensure the credit risk management and governance documents are current, fit for purpose and aligned with the stated Risk appetites
Supporting the embedding of Credit Policies across the business; seeking solutions to operational challenges as required
Providing guidance and support to the origination and portfolio teams about the evolution, implementation, and maintenance of their own processes, ensuring consistency and compliance with all Enterprise and Group level policies
Be involved with adhoc Policy and related matters when required
Oversight
The Enterprise-SME business operates across multiple specialist lending areas with both origination and portfolio relationship teams supporting customers and local risk management activities. Under the direction of the SME Head of Origination, Governance & Projects, the role-holder will contribute to building a regimen of product, sectoral and/or thematic hot spot reviews to oversight the credit qualities of the loan books. In turn, the outcomes of these reviews will feed into the credit policies and frameworks which govern the business’s adherence to state risk appetite thresholds.
Projects
Assist with projects where 1LOD Credit / Risk input is required. These can be varied and may require regular attendance at meetings, inputting subject matter guidance where appropriate
Assist with resolving actions arising from QA/QC reviews by 3rd, 2nd and 1st line quality assurance teams
The Person
Holder of university degree (ideally Finance related) and/or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Ideally supported by an appropriate professional qualification held in Banking/Risk management
Experience of SME banking systems, policy, operations, Credit oversight, underwriting requirement and products
Background of operating and managing within a control environment and compliance with operating procedures and risk policies. An understanding of credit risk appetite and risk management frameworks
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of management. Good presentation skills (including drafting reports).
A good understanding of the current regulatory regime applicable to banking institutions
Understanding of Credit Risk policies and processes for a Financial Services business

Ability to develop strong working relationships with Group Risk, Enterprise portfolio teams and wider stakeholders across the Bank
Demonstrate sound business/professional judgement through strength of character, independence of thought risk awareness and good values and behaviours
Ability to prioritise and manage / contribute to multiple and complex projects simultaneously
