English Language iTutoring (ELiT) are looking for a Data Scientist to join our cross-functional team in Bristol.
We build ground-breaking English Language Learning applications and automated language assessment technology. We work at the interface of EdTech software engineering and world-leading Natural Language Processing (NLP) research at Cambridge University.
Harnessing machine learning and data science, our Write & Improve and Speak & Improve applications are used by hundreds of thousands of learners and teachers worldwide, and our auto-marker technology delivers exam results to candidates without delay. Our internal annotation tools are used to enrich learner data and improve the performance of our machine learning pipeline.
As ELiT’s data scientist, you will be replacing an external consultant in our small but growing team. You will have the opportunity to make a significant impact across a wide range of areas, with extensive operational autonomy and strategic oversight of data across ELiT’s estate of products and services.
Supported by a highly competent technical team, including software engineers and NLP researchers, you’ll work alongside senior management to identify and implement opportunities for improving data pipelines & reporting infrastructure & business metrics and modelling, aimed at improved product performance. This will be demonstrated using a combination of statistical analysis, in-product testing and excellent communication and presentation skills.

Who we are
ELiT was formed in 2015 with the goal of taking computational linguistics research and applying it to English Language Learning. We now operate as part of Cambridge Assessment English and Cambridge University Press, who are world leaders in English language assessment and educational publishing.
We currently have eight software engineers in our Bristol office and a remote team who specialise in language education, computational linguistics and NLP.
The pandemic requires all of us to work remotely for the time being, but we are looking forward to more flexible working when it’s safe to return to the office.
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for an experienced Data Scientist to develop and enhance ELiT’s data science capabilities. You will be highly collaborative, working closely with colleagues in the ELiT team, and with Cambridge colleagues to enhance data science capabilities throughout the wider Cambridge organisation.
