Description

Expanding financial service start-up specialising in Renewable Energy require a Senior Data Scientist to support strategic analytics and decisioning in the UK energy markets and maintain competitive advantage. You will work on cutting-edge forecasts, tools and strategies, progressing to take data science leadership responsibilities, reporting directly to the board.

Background/Key Initiatives & Opportunity:

As with any smaller-sized company, you will have to be somewhat of a full-stack developer: able to get data (sFTPs, push-services, APIs), store data effectively (MySQL database on AWS), retrieve data and process it into a tool (R, Julia, or Python), get the tool running live (AWS) with an intuitive interface for the end user (React JS). That is not to say you are on your own in this process, you will be supported by the Technology Lead and Data Scientists who know the ins-and-outs of the business and the market they operate in. There are also dedicated developers who can bring your tool to browser to help the UK energy sector – providing liquidity, security of supply and the smooth integration of renewables.

Key initiatives include:

• Improving spotlight on UK electricity demand
• UK wind energy generation forecasts
• UK solar energy generation forecasts
• Various energy price forecasts which assist and drive the company strategies
• Develop new Tools generated from in depth understanding of certain industry processes
• Further advancement of automated strategies

Progressing within the company (and with support of the Technology Lead) you will improve processes of taking ideas to production tools, helping decide new hires, task-setting, keeping up-to-date with developments in the field, and guiding company expansion as the data science representative to the board. Over time, the role will still remain focused on solving some of the organisations most interesting and far reaching problems.

Please note: this is a highly collaborative environment so proximity to the Head Office in Bristol is essential.

Key Experience and Skills Required:

Essential

• Outstanding programming in R, Python or Julia.
• Direct training in Statistics, or a similar highly numerate field to minimum degree level.
• Well versed in the tools available to the data scientist.
• Experience making live/production tools/models which have been used by others.
• Experience with SQL databases/data acquisition and management.
• Experience using version control
• Meticulous with your data, fantastic models are wasted on incorrect data.
• A good human-interface; you will be communicating with a wide audience with Developers, Directors, Data Scientists and non-technical staff

Desirable

• Meteorological expertise – knowledge of weather data and models is highly desirable
• Direct energy market expertise; past employment at a TSO, supplier, aggregator, energy market service provider will help transition and perhaps bring something new to the team.
• Experience in financial services risk/analytics modelling
• Experience with AWS
• A quantitative Masters/PhD/an extensive number of relevant MOOCs
• A desire to understand everything to fine detail.
• You have no issues with hounding someone for an answer, sometimes the best knowledge discovery is done via call and email.
• Experience managing a small team.
• If you primarily code Python or Julia, a willingness to get to dabble in R where necessary.
