Scottish Water
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
Do you want to help us reduce the risk of flooding across Scotland and improve the quality of our rivers and shorelines?
Scottish Water’s Catchment Planners are some of the unsung heroes that keep Scotland safe. They play a crucial role in protecting people, property and our natural environment.
The Sewer Flooding team are focused on improving the capacity of Scotland’s sewer network. They exist to prevent sewerage spills, ensure effective surface water drainage, and to reduce debris in our rivers. In short, to reduce flooding risk across the country.
What you’ll do
You’ll be focused on understanding the risks and opportunities in your allocated catchments by working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. This knowledge will allow you to lead flooding and sewer overflow projects.
These projects can vary greatly in scope, from large-scale sewer upgrade schemes to improvements at a single Combined Sewer Overflow or customer property. They could be city-wide strategic partnerships exploring blue/green infrastructure in urbanised areas, or small scale testing of new technology.
You’ll initiate and lead projects through the exploration and planning phases, working with a wide range of stakeholders including Scottish Water colleagues, technical consultants and construction contractors. You’ll advance the projects through a defined process of scoping, survey, hydraulic model review, solution optioneering and design to a stage where the preferred solution is identified. You’ll then develop a compelling business case to secure the necessary investment to bring your solution to life.
What you’ll need
You’ll need some experience of working in the water industry, with a good understanding of wastewater networks, hydraulic modelling, and surface water management. Some knowledge of GIS and/or hydraulic modelling software would be very helpful.
You’ll be very comfortable with reviewing and writing concise, technical reports, business cases and presentations with actionable recommendations.
Some of the technical data we work with can be complicated. So you’ll need the ability to communicate complex issues to internal and external stakeholders.
This is a role that suits someone who is analytical and conscientious in seeking the evidence necessary for data-based decision-making.
While mostly a desk-based role, you’ll sometimes need to go and visit project sites, so it’s important that you have a full UK issued driving licence.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This is a full time job, working Monday to Friday from 9-5pm. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
The starting salary for this role will be between £35,384 and £47,924.
Scottish Water has had a long standing commitment to hybrid working (even before the pandemic). You’ll have an official base location, but you’re welcome to work from home if you don’t have a particular reason to pop into the office.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be – we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on Sunday 18th June 2023.
