The Department for Business and Trade (“DBT”) and Inspire People are partnering together to bring you an exciting opportunity as a Senior Software Developer to join a team that ensures you will plan and lead the development of related stories by understanding the whole system. Collaborating with colleagues in other disciplines to understand what needs to be built, you’ll deliver in an environment which uses agile methodologies and focuses on rapid delivery of high-quality digital services. £55,400 to £74,600 (including allowances) plus excellent Civil Service benefits and pension. Salary is dependent on location and technical skills as assessed at interview. Flexible, hybrid working from London, Cardiff, or Darlington.
DBT’s Digital, Data and Technology team develops and operates tools, services, and platforms that enable the UK government to provide world leading support to businesses in the UK and overseas.
As a Senior Software Developer at DBT, you’ll be influential in shaping the community of practice in DDaT as a champion of developer ownership of code quality with Test Driven Development, Pair Programming, Prototyping/MVP and small, frequent releases that deliver user benefits. You’ll identify, validate and promote system improvements that deliver increased robustness, resilience and stability.

Essential Skills and Experience as a Senior Software Engineer
You should be able to demonstrate:
. Broad understanding of software languages including commercial experience with Python
. Delivering code quality with Test Driven Development
. Delivering user-centred features and services within an agile environment using practices such as Scrum, Kanban and/or XP
. Working with APIs, databases, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure and/or GCP
. Managing your own professional development
Desirable Skills and Experience as a Senior Software Engineer
While not essential, it would be ideal if you have demonstrable skills and experience of:
. Node.js and React
. An understanding of Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
