This is an exciting opportunity to join a small team specialising in providing marine environment information that is vital to the success of military operations and the protection of our marine environment.
About the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO)
UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners, surveying and charting the world’s oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.
The role
Senior Tactical Product Specialists are responsible for planning, producing, verifying and improving world renowned products which allow our defence customers to exploit the maritime environment during live operations and exercises.
There are currently two roles. One will work with Littoral and Riverine (LitR) products. The Littoral and Riverine area of Tactical Products combine a wide range of UKHO and external data, imagery and textual information into bespoke, mission critical products for the defence customer. Often required at short notice, these products generally enable Royal Navy units to operate close to the shore to deploy/recover amphibious forces or operate in confined, high risk areas.
The other role is part of the Additional Military Layers (AMLs) who create electronic layers which augment ENCs for a range of military operations. The Additional Military Layers area of Tactical Products manipulate data and information to create bespoke georeferenced layers which are used alongside ENCs. Whilst conforming to a range of international and evolving standards, these layers are varied to aid critical decision making in high pressure military operations and exercises.
Working within a small team of specialists, you will be liaising with other UKHO teams to combine a wide range of data, imagery and textual information into tactical products and services. You will also work closely with Defence Product and Services Managers to understand the customers needs. This will inevitably require you to build and maintain a close working relationship with our customers which will in turn give you a unique opportunity to see your products in use and play a key role in their development.
As subject matter experts for their products, Senior Tactical Product Specialists will routinely offer technical insight into their products at national, and occasionally international events. There is therefore an expectation that postholders will be available for occasional overseas travel.
About you
The role of a Senior Tactical Products Specialist is a balance of technical expertise and example setting. To be successful in the role, you will need to have the technical capability and knowledge to undertake the more complex activity within the team and effectively verify decisions made by more junior staff, such as providing feedback and guidance in an inclusive and nurturing way to enable others to build their own capability.
You will also require experience in the examination and assessment of incoming geospatial/hydrographic data. You will also need experience in the compilation, maintenance and verification of data and information using ESRI GIS and production tools (for the LitR area) or CARIS GIS tools (for the AML area).
In return
The UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential and make an impact. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. We offer a range of flexible working options, an award-winning office environment and a generous annual leave allowance of 26.5 days, rising to 31.5 days after 5 years. The opportunities open to you here are hard to beat!
